Eric Tangradi
Eric Tangradi is the Hockey Director and Head Coach of the Boys’ Prep Ice Hockey program at Shady Side Academy, where he leads the program with a strong emphasis on long-term player development at both the youth and prep levels. Now in his fourth year at SSA, Tangradi continues to build a comprehensive hockey pathway designed to develop skilled, confident, and competitive student-athletes prepared for success beyond the Academy.
A second-round selection (42nd overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 NHL Draft, Tangradi brings elite-level insight from a 12-year professional career spanning more than 700 games. He competed at the NHL level with the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and Winnipeg Jets, while also playing a significant leadership role in the AHL. As an assistant captain of the Grand Rapids Griffins, he helped guide the team to a 2017 Calder Cup Championship, gaining firsthand experience in professional standards, accountability, and team culture.
Tangradi applies this professional foundation directly to player development, focusing on skill progression, hockey IQ, physical habits, and mindset. He has led skill development clinics, small-group sessions, and one-on-one training with youth players throughout Western Pennsylvania, helping young athletes build strong fundamentals while preparing them for the demands of prep, junior, and collegiate hockey.
His approach is shaped by his own prep hockey experience, giving him a clear understanding of the independent school model and its role in athlete development. Tangradi is a graduate of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa., where he was later inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. He began his prep and high-school career at Archbishop Carroll High School in Philadelphia, helping lead the Patriots to a Pennsylvania Cup Class AA state championship in 2004.
